Course Description
Students in grade six expand their understanding of history by studying the people and events that ushered in the dawn of the major Western and non-Western ancient civilizations. Geography is of special significance in the development of the human story. Continued emphasis is placed on the everyday lives, problems, and accomplishments of people, their role in developing social, economic, and political structures, as well as in establishing and spreading ideas that helped transform the world forever. Students develop higher levels of critical thinking by considering why civilizations developed where and when they did, why they became dominant, and why they declined. Students analyze the interactions among the various cultures, emphasizing their enduring contributions and the link, despite time, between the contemporary and ancient worlds. We will also emphasize reading and writing skills.
Grading
All assignments will be graded on a 4-point rubric
Grades are weighted into the following categories
Homework
Homework will be assigned each class session unless noted on the board. Homework assignments will be written on the board under the agenda and must be copied into your agenda (even if you have completed it). Homework must be turned in or checked at the beginning of class or it will be marked late. I do not collect homework the day it is assigned even if it is completed before the end of class. Homework is often work that was started in class and must be finished at home.
General Classroom Rules
· Keep cell phones off and in backpacks. If your parent needs to get a message to you they should call the school at 451-4310.
· No food, gum or drinks allowed in class with the exception of water.
Specific Rules
There are different rules for specific activities in class. For instance, the amount of noise allowed during group work is different than the noise allowed for a test. Specific rules will be covered using CHAMPS.
Absences
If you are absent you will be responsible for getting any late work. Come to class on your return to school during AST (8:45-9:10 each morning). Work that was due on the day of your absence is due the day you get back.
Partner work/talk
You will be seated next to another student who will be your main partner. You will also have several different partners each quarter based on an appointment clock. You will be required to interact with your partner during partner talks and pair share time. Please speak to your partner in a positive manner.
Group work
From time to time, we will work in groups to complete assignments. I will put you in these groups. Everyone must participate. Work with your classmates and do not complain about who is in your group. The majority of your grade on group work will be dependent on what you contributed personally.
Parents
Please check your student’s agenda daily, periodically check that they have their required supplies and that their binders are organized. Keep up with ATLAS and check into my website at mrisaacsclass.com. In addition, find time to have discussions with your child about their classes and about events occurring in the world.
Finally
If you are having any difficulties in class or with assignments please come and see me during AST in the mornings. Please take this home and read it over with your parent/guardian. Sign that you have read it over and have your parent/guardian read sign that they have read it. If you need to reach me you may email me at Jason.isaac@fresnounified.org
